  • Approximately 6,800 complaints were received during FY 2010.
  • About 30% (2,000) were not pursued because they either lacked sufficient information, they were not within the jurisdiction of TMB, or they did not represent a potential violation of the Medical Practice Act. These cases are referred to as "Non-Jurisdictional".
  • About 45% of the remaining jurisdictional complaints were dismissed because the information received by the TMB within the first 30 days indicated no violation of the Medical Practice Act.
  • The remaining 2,700 jurisdictional complaints were pursued through the process of a formal investigation. About 70 – 75% of the formal investigations (1,900 cases) were based on complaints relating to the standard of care.
  • Texas law requires all standard of care cases to be reviewed by at least two expert panelists in the Respondent's specialty.
